Fowey Regatta

Fowey Regatta is the one week that I look forward to every summer. It is a week when everyone in Fowey joins in with the celebrations and takes part in the events. There is so much fun to be had, whether that be decorating ginger bread men and crabbing for the children or live bands on the town quay for the adults.

The racing throughout the week is extremely competitive and beautiful to watch. Many of the races start in the harbour so you get a great view from the Town Quay or the Royal Yacht club. The Falmouth Working Boats racing in the harbour are a site you will never forget. It is incredible how such large powerful boats can compete around such a short course. Then there are the beautiful Fowey Rivers with their colourful sails dancing on the water.

The Red Arrows always put on a splendid display and this year was no exception. Everyone I have spoken to agrees that this year was the best yet. It was a beautiful clear sunny day and the town and the surrounding hills were full to the brim with spectators. If you watch them from the water on a boat you can see the pilots upside down as they skim above the mast.

The crabbing competition is probably the children’s favourite during Fowey Regatta and this takes place every day even after the competition has been won. The pontoon seem to be the preferred spot as everyone tries to fill their buckets. All the crabs are returned, of course, ready to be caught again later in the day.

Carnival has a fantastic atmosphere as people line the streets to see their friends in all sorts of costumes march by. The effort and planning that goes into this is quite unbelievable and most certainly brings a smile to everyone along the way. The procession is always lead by the Town Band who are always welcomed by very bar along the way.

As I love Fowey Regatta so much, I decided to create a film with my company Home Run Films to show people how much goes on throughout these 7 days. Hope you enjoy!
